5: Fashion Museum
and Assembly Rooms
The story of fashion over the past 400 years is brought alive at the Fashion Museum, a world-class collection of contemporary and historical dress. The Museum has recently been re-displayed in a series of themes including menswear and womenswear, dress for day and dress for evening, alternative fashion and fashion today.
Special exhibitions for 2007/8 include 17th century gloves, and 1977- a photographic display of punk and new wave bands. Visitors are able to try on reproduction corsets and crinolines in the interactive displays.
The whole experience takes place within the magnificent setting of the Assembly Rooms, where in Georgian Times, more than a thousand people would gather for parties and balls.
The Assembly Rooms café is open nearly every day and there is a particularly fine fashion bookshop and gift shop.
Opening hours: Jan-Feb & Nov-Dec 11am-4.00pm, exit 5.00pm. Mar-Oct 11am-5pm, exit 6pm.
